BED BUGS CONTROL TREATMENT
Bed bugs are six-legged nocturnal insects that feed only on blood, usually that of humans or warm-blooded animals. The most common bed bug, Cimex lectularius, is the species most adapted to living with humans. Adult bed bugs appear mahogany to red in shade and are flat and oval-shaped. They can grow to be no more than ¼ inch. Immature bed bugs (nymphs) resemble the adults, but are smaller and somewhat lighter in color and can appear translucent. Because of their morphology, bed bugs can live inside mattresses, baseboards, box springs, headboards, and many other cracks and crevices around the house. Bed bugs can lay 200 to 500 eggs during their lifetime. Under normal room temperatures and with an adequate food supply, bed bugs will typically live up to a total of 316 days.
ANTS CONTROL TREATMENT
Ants are six legged social insects that can be found almost anywhere on the planet. There are 455 types of ants in North America alone and they can be identified by their elbowed antennae and a distinctive node-like structure that forms a slender waist. Ants prefer cool and damp locations and live in large and complex colonies that can consist of millions. Ants build many different types of homes. Many ants build simple little mounds out of dirt or sand. Other ants use small sticks mixed with dirt and sand to make a stronger mound that offers protection from rain. Some ants also live in wood, like termites. A single queen ant can live for up to 30 years and can lay millions of eggs over her lifetime. Eggs usually develop into full adult ants over an 8 to 12 week time-frame.
CARPET BEETLES CONTROL TREATMENT
Carpet beetles can cause serious damage to fabrics, carpets, furs, stored foods and other items derived from plants and animals. Carpet beetle larvae do not feed on synthetic fibers, but will feed on blends of wool and synthetics. Eggs, larvae, pupae and adults may be brought into the home and spread to such places as the lint collected behind baseboards, in air ducts, in the stuffing of furniture and in the bristles of old paint brushes. From these unsuspected places, carpet beetles may cause damage for a long time.
Black Carpet Beetle
The most commonly found species of carpet beetle in New York is the black carpet beetle. Larvae and adults are distinctly different from other carpet beetles. Adult black carpet beetles range from 1/8 to 3/16 inch in length. They are shiny black and dark brown with brownish legs. Full-sized larvae may be as long as 5/16 inch. They range in color from light brown to almost black. Larvae are shiny, smooth, hard and are covered with short, stiff hairs. They are carrot-shaped with a tuft of long hairs at the narrow end.
Varied Carpet Beetle
The second type of carpet beetle often seen in New York is the varied carpet beetle, which is about 1/10 inch long; the coloring is black with an irregular pattern of white, brown and dark yellow scales on its wing covers. Mature larvae are about the same length as adults, have alternating light and dark brown transverse stripes and are distinguishable from other carpet beetle larvae because they are broader at one end.
COCKROACHES CONTROL TREATMENT
Cockroaches are the most common insect pests infesting homes, food service establishments and other structures in the Northeast. They are large and omnivorous insects that are capable of transmitting disease, which causes food poisoning. Recently, cockroaches have been found to be the source of a highly common allergen in people, second only to house dust. There are many species of roaches but the German cockroach is by far the most common roach found in homes. Other types of roaches include the Oriental and American cockroaches that usually prefer dark, damp areas such as basements, floor drains, crawl spaces and utility closets. Cockroaches typically become established in homes after being introduced in grocery bags, with laundry, or, in some cases, wandering in from outdoors. Once cockroaches become established they are prolific breeders, capable of producing several thousand offspring in a year.
RODENT CONTROL TREATMENT
The term “rodent” encompasses both mice and rats. Rodents are night-traveling creatures, known to eat and contaminate food as well as damage buildings and other property by gnawing and burrowing in structures. They may also spread diseases (such as salmonella) that affect people and pets.
Mice are commonly found in homes and can live for up to 18 months. They range in length from 5 to 8 inches and can weigh up to 1 ounce. Females can produce anywhere from 36 to 192 offspring per year. Rats, specifically the Norway Rat, are commonly found in urban and suburban areas of North America. They range in length from 13 to 18 inches and can weigh up to 11 ounces. Females can produce anywhere from 35 to 85 offspring annually; the average rat will live up to a little under a year. Rats have been known to transmit disease such as the plague and tuberculosis.
